Signal, noise & SNR

Signal-to-noise ratio compares the desired signal with noise and is commonly expressed in decibels. Measurement bandwidth and test conditions matter.

SNR and distortion

SNR describes noise relative to signal. SINAD also includes distortion. These measurements answer different questions and should be compared using matching definitions.

Reading an audio specification

Check signal level, bandwidth and weighting. A converter’s laboratory specification does not automatically describe the entire microphone or headset, whose analog circuitry and surroundings also contribute noise.
